Selling the unapproved drug on social media or messaging apps is illegal in the United Kingdom, as it is an unlicensed medication that must not be marketed or supplied for human use under the British medical regulations.

Several content creators try to circumvent the rules by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled drug, but advertising and supply can still breach medicines, marketing, and customer regulations, potentially leading to fines, prosecution or imprisonment.

Platform Oversight and Security Actions

A spokesperson for Telegram stated it actively monitored dangerous material on its platform including material that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Professional Warnings

“People are administering materials they can’t verify. Although the research behind this drug is valid, these digital products may not include what they advertise,” stated a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service linked the surge in demand to current price rises for approved weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, individuals are using online platforms. A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company stated retatrutide was in third stage research studies and had not been reviewed or authorized by any regulatory agency globally. “Consequently at this time no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, adding that any item “falsely representing itself as a Lilly experimental substance not yet authorized … may subject patients to possibly significant medical dangers”.
